French
Intent
At Milborne Port Primary School, we believe that learning languages equips our children with the knowledge and skills to take advantage of the opportunities of life in the 21st century. Technology, globalisation and international travel are bringing more of the world within our reach. Therefore, we aim to provide the knowledge of French as a social skill along the National Curriculum Aims:
To ensure that all pupils:
- Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
French at Milborne Port focuses on enjoying languages as a demonstrable life skill, teaching communication and adaptability, learning how to interact with others in the target language, making children less likely to be stuck in one mode of thinking.
Introducing students to French-speaking countries will provide them with cultural awareness, encouraging them to see things from a range of perspectives, develop their problem-solving skills, and make them more adaptable, resourceful and creative.
Giving students the opportunity of learning a language, combines the intellectual with the practical, as no other subject does. Children will need to be able to learn new words and phrases and think on their own, in finding exactly the right foreign word or phrase, they will get a real sense of achievement.
